Whistler Day 5

It’s Thursday and everyone is off to a lazy start. It’s 11 and no one is really moving around. Steve is the only one that goes out at 1PM. Metzer, Elad and I decide to get lunch at the Crepe Montagne. Apparently, Metzer went there nearly twice a day for the duration of his trip. Metzer is confident that the waitresses and manager would recognize him since he went in so often. So Elad calls Metzer on his statement and bets lunch. We walk in and it turns out none of the waitresses were working last season. So, the questioon is, did Metzer lose or is it a truce?

We head out to the Village for some postcards and shopping. I got new sunglasses. I’ve been looking for a pair for a while now with no luck. I find a decent pair in a kitschy gift store. It’s a beautiful day to walk around and enjoy a latte at Second Cup. We handle some housekeeping issues like groceries, liquor, and stamps before heading home. Brian headed back today and met Steve on the slopes and got in a run before he landed on his ass on the flat part of the run. Steve sprained or twisted both his left knee and ankle. They come home and hit the hot tub.

After some recouperating, we head out to 21 Steps for dinner. It’s called 21 Steps because that’s how many steps you have to climb to get to the restaurant. All the way up the stairs, they had 5×7 black and whites of various stairs and ladders. Steve is limping up the stairs and Brian is wincing all the way up. We decided to sit upstairs in the lounge with wash completely empty when we showed up but got packed by the time we left. We ordered a number of small plates to start - goat cheese with sauteed onions, mussels in red curry sauce, baked oysters, chinese pork with scallions - and a great bottle of syrah. Elad is convinced that the curry sauce has mangoes in it. The rest of us don’t think so but Elad bets a back wax for Metzer’s chest wax that it does. We ask the waitress and we wait for a reply.

For dinner I had the coconut curry chicken with jasmine rice and vegetables. Mmm, mmm good! Everybody’s meal was great. After the second bottle of wine, Metzer claims that if we can push the cork back into the wine bottle, he can get the cork out in one piece without breaking the bottle. It’s a day for bets! We find out that there’s NO mango in the curry sauce and indeed the cork can be removed from the bottle in one piece without breaking it. I won’t share the trick but if anyone wants to bet me a dinner, I’m game =) Must remember to pick up a wax kit….
We head over to the theater to watch Smokin’ Aces. Brian heads home since he doesn’t think he can sit for 2 hours. It’s a 9:50 showing and advanced anything is NOT needed. I think there were 8 other people with us there that night. I, of course, fall promptly asleep and wake up for the start and doze on and off as they set up the storyline. I wake up to watch the most gruesome parts of the movies — fingerless people, chainsaws, automatic firepower…. It got quite cold and while the walk back is nice, it’s nice to be home sweet home.
There’s talk of hitting the clubs tomorrow night for the single boys. We’ll see if anyone manages to get any numbers =)
